BG level was 99 this morning. WOOOHOOO. No indigestion, no signs of diverticulitis.

I am however pretty bored of eating low carb. 😦

I will just have to get over it!

July 11, 2009 – I actually ate breakfast!

Posted on July 11, 2009. Filed under: Daily Food Diary | Tags: , |

So it wasn’t much of a breakfast but I just ate  1/2 cup lowfat cottage cheese, 1/4 cup blueberries, and a little turkey breakfast sausage. I detest breakfast but ate it. I’m really trying to make myself eat something in the morning and I aim for eating before I’ve been up 45 minutes but it’s usually an hour to an hour and a half later that I can stomach food.

I know breakfast is important and I know they say its the most important meal of the day but I just can’t bring myself to eat it most days. And I’m trying, I really am! I just don’t feel hungry until I’ve been up awhile and the thought of eating makes my stomach turn. So, I think I did well eating what I ate this morning.

Hey, it’s a start!

By the way, my FBG was 134. Too high again. Dammit.

Well, pooh!

After a few good days of BG and little insulin it’s all blown up! This afternoon I ate 6 Triscuits, the plain ones, and the BG before dinner at the gym was 169. I took 4 units of Novolog to correct that, purposefully undershooting since I was about to go work out, and cover the 1/2 wrap I’d eat. Well, when they handed me my dinner there were pita chips on the plate. I ate some of them, not a lot of them, and then worked out for an hour. An hour! BG after the work out was 177 and an hour later it’s 211! Grrr, must have been the pita chips. I just took 10 units of Novolog and my night time dose of 20 units of Novolin N.

I won’t eat the pita chips again unless I’m really low.

Have I mentioned lately how much I dislike being Diabetic?

FBG was good this morning but I couldn’t stomach breakfast, no matter how hard I tried. I did fix the man some cream of wheat and 2 slices of turkey bacon but couldn’t eat any myself.

I was about to have salad for lunch when I got a call from work telling me I was late. Ooops! I forgot the schedule changed and I was supposed to be there at 11 rather than 1 so I ignored the salad, got dressed, and rushed in. During my lunch break I had some unbreaded grilled chicken with a little bit of pizza sauce and cheese, all baked in the oven. It’s way too high in fat but is okay for a now and then quick meal.

When I left work two hours later the BG was 96. I ran to the office, changed clothes, picked up the man, and we hustled to the gym. We had dinner at their little cafe; 1/2 a turkey pastrami and cheese wrap (whole wheat wrap) and a few baked pita chips. BG right before working out was 74. I knew I couldn’t go crazy with the workout (like I ever do!) so I walked an easy pace for 1/2 an hour on the treadmill and checked it again. It was 54! Oooops! Mind you, I hadn’t had insulin since 7 AM so it wasn’t insulin causing that and I’d just eaten a small meal of pretty good carbs. So what happened? I don’t know but I do wonder if my insulin sensitivity has increased. Can it improve so dramatically and so quickly? Good question..

I stopped the workout, chewed a couple of glucose tabs and took my shower. We got home and it was better at 97.

I really have to figure out this exercise, insulin, and carb issue, and might have to eat a few more carbs before a workout.

Thoughts on this?

FBG this morning was 141, too high! I took my standard Novolin N and 3 units of Novolog to correct the high and cover the coffee I was about to drink. The rest of the day it was good so I didn’t sweat it and didn’t need any insulin. Until I got home from work at about 6:30 tonight. I tested and it was 370. What?? 370?? Normally I’d test again because I haven’t seen a number that high in awhile and I didn’t eat anything to cause that. But…I’ve been feeling kind of queasy for a day or so and figured I’m getting sick and illness causes my blood sugar to go wacky. So, I shot 20 units of Novolog, ate my dinner of three ounces of baked salmon and a very small baked potato and we headed for the gym.

We only worked out for 35 minutes since the gym closed at 8 tonight and we needed time to shower after the workout. When we got home I checked the BG and it was 68. 68 less than two hours after it was 370? I checked it again and it was 70. Hmmm… I felt okay but ate 10 small green grapes because the last thing I need is a hypo. 15 minutes later it was 74 , not much better. Now I’m trying to head off a hypo…

Anyway, the point is I messed up big time by not checking the BG again after that 370. I don’t think that was accurate. Then I injected insulin. Then I added exercise to the mix. But hey, I haven’t needed Novolog except for when I first wake up in the morning for four days now so this is the first time I’ve shot much insulin and then exercised. Yet another crap shoot for Denise to figure out, huh? I’ll figure it out but man, its a little scary at times.

Update – by 11 PM I was in the throes of a hypo (BG was 32)  that just about knocked my socks off. It took about an hour to get the BG up to a safe level and I woke up with it this morning at 114. Whew!!

Suggestions on how to better handle insulin and exercise would be very welcome!

Well, my FBG wasn’t so good this morning – 174. 😦 But I injected my 20 units of Novolin N and 8 units of Novolog to correct the high and cover the coffee I was about to drink. I think part of that high might have been from the all natural peanut butter I ate by the spoonful last night. I didn’t have much of it, but apparently I had too much! Okay, I had too much and I know it and knew it then. But it was so darned good! I have a problem with all natural peanut butter, though. I don’t seem to know when to stop eating it.

So this morning we went to the local farmer’s market but what we didn’t know was that it was closed today because of the holiday. Fortunately there were two people there, though, selling tomatoes, onions and watermelon. We got quite a few tomatoes and onions for slicing and making pico de gallo and summer salad (but I use splenda in the salad and omit the parsley) and a very small watermelon, which is now sitting quietly in the fridge. I’ll take a little slice to work with me tomorrow to have on my break.

We went to the gym last night and worked out for an hour then went to Target for more test strips then home. I’d forgotten my glucometer so I tested when I got home and my BG was 157! What? After an hour workout? What must it have been before? Too high, that’s what!

So although I ate okay, except for the peanut butter, yesterday was a weird and tough day blood sugar wise.

Maybe today will be better. One can hope…

And it’s been a great day for blood sugar after I got that FBG under control. I haven’t had insulin since right after I got up this morning and the BG’s been rockin’ steady between 80 and 98. Before dinner my it was 70 (man, did I need to eat!) and an hour after eating a dinner of seasoned chicken breast and two small bowls of vegetable soup it was 84. This was right before a 45 minute workout, including weight machines, and after the workout the BG was 74! Yeah, that’s just a tad low so when I got home I ate a cheese stick. I’ll check it again in a bit and if its still under 80 I’ll have some celery with just a little of that all natural peanut butter.

The gym closes at noon tomorrow so we’ll go in the morning before we open the shop. Hopefully, tomorrow will be a great BG day, also.

This morning my FBG was  89. Go, me! That’s pretty darn good, folks! As soon as I got up I took my Novolin N and 3 units of Novolog so I could have my coffee but couldn’t stomach the thought of food so I’m just now snacking on a cheese stick and two cracked pepper and olive oil Triscuits.  Those cracked pepper and olive oil Triscuits just rock, by the way. The man’s breakfast was cream of wheat, toast, and a couple of thin slices of turkey pastrami. He’d had a banana when he first got up so his BG was 247 before breakfast! Ouch! But he absolutely must eat so eat he did though he really shouldn’t have had so many carbs. We’ll see how that BG is in about an hour.

I need to do laundry but am waiting until tomorrow so I can spend most of today cooking and just relaxing. I have a slow cooker of vegetable soup going (thanks for the idea, Connie!) and am looking over the low carb cookbooks Connie left with me. Some of the recipes are a bit high in fat but I can reduce that number fairly easily, I think.

We went to the gym last night. I walked 3/4 of a mile on the treadmill then walked 8 laps in the resistance pool. Man, did those laps give my ankles and calves a good workout! And I slept great afterwards.

Oh by the way, it’s been almost 24 hours since I’ve had a cigarette. 🙂

Beef, cheese & jalapeno sausage with cabbage and green beans

Beef, cheese & jalapeno sausage with cabbage and green beans

Dinner tonight was very good. We had beef, jalapeno, and cheese sausage on baked cabbage with a side of fresh grilled green beans. I put a little homemade pico de gallo on my sausage and cabbage and it really perked it up.

Today was a pretty good day, blood sugar wise. We got up at 5:15 and my FBG was 97. I took my 20 units of Novolin N and 2 units of Novolog and we made it to the gym by 5:45. We didn’t have breakfast first and later wished we had!

Before working out, my BG was 116 and after an hour of walking on the treadmill and walking the indoor track it was 117. Not a decrease like I’ve seen since we started going to the gym but not bad, either.

For lunch I had a salad and one small blackened fish fillet with some spinach. It was good but not too exciting. The BG liked it though, and that’s always nice.

The rest of the day my blood sugar was pretty good, only going above 130 after the 1/2 whole wheat wrap with turkey pastrami I had at the Healthy Hideaway, the little cafe at the gym. We’d gone back to work out again this evening. Even then it wasn’t horrendous at 159. Not good but a darn site better than 259!

Rod sees his doctor tomorrow so we’re eager to find out what she has to say about his cholesterol.

Connie, please post the salmon recipe!

Ugh, blood sugar woes

Posted on June 28, 2009. Filed under: Daily Food Diary | Tags: , , |

Today was an up and down day for me, blood sugar wise. I’d get it under control then it would climb up and before long go back down. The workouts are definitely affecting the BG but right now its a pretty confusing mess. I hope that time and consistency in exercise make it a little more consistent.

When I woke yesterday the BG was 123. I took my Novolin N and 2 units of Novolog. I had breakfast within 45 minutes of waking and I ate about 3 ounces of grilled chicken breast, one scrambled egg and one piece of wheat toast. Two hours later the BG was 230! Now, isn’t that ridiculous? We headed to the gym after that and the before workout BG was 180. It had come down quite a bit on it’s own. One hour of walking the indoor track and treadmill and the BG was 109. Much better!

We went to Wal-Mart and when we got home I knew I needed to eat. BG was 82. For lunch I had a weighed and measured meal of two ounces of chicken fried steak, two Tablespoons of mashed potatoes and one small broccoli spear. And no insulin because I was at 82 and was about to eat a small meal. BG two hours later was 217. What??? From 82 to 217? Yeah, the meal had some carbs but not that many! It certainly doesn’t seem that it would cause that kind of number. Does it?

Around 4 PM we headed back to the gym. BG before one hour workout was 133. After the workout it was 91.

Dinner was 4 ounces of salmon Connie brought here with her over the weekend, green beans, spinach, and one, yes one, bite of the dirty rice she made to go with it. BG before the meal was 76 and two hours later it was 162. Huh??

Obviously, exercise makes a huge impact on my blood sugar but I haven’t figured out just how much yet. I’m concerned about shooting Novolog, eating, then heading to a gym because I don’t need or want a hypo. But I’m also concerned about high blood sugar.

Thoughts on this?

FBG was 113 this morning. Still a little higher than I like but not too bad considering I  had a hypo last night before bed and ate half the kitchen’s contents! Okay, I didn’t really eat that much but I did go slightly overboard, as I usually do during a hypo.

Yesterday I didn’t eat breakfast (surprise!) and though a co-worker brought me a grilled chicken salad I only ate the chicken and a few croutons. For dinner, I had LJS’s salmon and vegetables again so yesterday was a very low carb day. The BG was great all day, too.

Let’s see how today goes.

The BG has been great all day. Rod just made himself a treat of some low carb ice cream in a cup with milk. I had a bite and it was fantastic! But milk has too many carbs for me. However, unsweetened soy milk has about 4 grams of carbs per cup so that might be an option. Not that I like soy milk but mixed with low carb ice cream it might be pretty darn good!
